Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform that was launched in 2015. It is designed to allow developers to build and deploy decentralized applications (dapps) on top of its blockchain.
Ethereum was created by Vitalik Buterin, a programmer an d cryptocurrency researcher, with the goal of creating a platform that would enable developers to build smart contracts and dapps that can run autonomously without the need for a centralized authority.
Smart contracts are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement between buyer and seller being directly written into lines of code. They allow for secure and direct peer-to-peer transactions without the need for intermediaries. Ethereum's blockchain also allows for the creation and use of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), which are organizations run by rules encoded as computer programs on the blockchain.

Ethereum's native cryptocurrency is called Ether (ETH), and it is used as a means of payment for transactions on the Ethereum network. Ether is also used to pay for transaction fees and to incentivize miners to maintain the network by verifying and processing transactions.
Ethereum has gained widespread adoption and popularity in the cryptocurrency community, and is currently the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization after Bitcoin.
